12 important life saving – aircraft crash landing tips

life saving tips for aircraft crash landings

There are lot of people who will never be ready to travel in an Aeroplane because of the fear that it can crash.
Have you ever heard this when you are planning to take your parents in the flight for first time ? The recent plane crashes made people even more afraid of taking air travel.

Planes do crash, though it is rather rare these days. Usually the crash can happen due to the error made by the pilot or the malfunction of any of the engine. No point in blaming anyone once it happened.

We can’t avoid the situation but can handle it wisely. Here are some of the tips which I think will be useful during air travels. Kindly share this aircraft crash landing tips to your friends as well.

Listen everything carefully

Listen everything carefully

Listen carefully regarding the safety announcements made before every take off. Safety cards and information will also be provided in front of each seats. Make sure to read everything carefully.

I have seen people are not at all giving importance to read and understand these safety instructions.Don’t keep it till the last moment, read it thoroughly. People who are the regular travelers of flight may not be reading it every time. Don’t be shy here, read it guys.

Knowing the 5 Row Rule

5 in a row rule

According to Ben Sherman, the author of The Survivors Guide: The Secrets and Science That Could Save Your Life, research shows that passengers usually move an average of 5 rows before they can get off a burning aircraft.

Sitting any further away than 5 rows from any exit row greatly reduces your chances of surviving. You can also slightly improve your chances by sitting at the back of the plane.

Do not panic, first things first

This is the important quality that every traveler should have. Do not panic in emergency situation, be calm and try to relax your kids as well.Being in a panic state will make the situation even worst, so be calm and relaxed.

I know everyone will be panicked once they met with an unexpected situation which demands their life. Practice is the only solution here.So try not be in panic sate during emergency situations.

The cabin crew are trained to manage these kind of situations and they will tell the best options for safe exit from the aircraft. Therefore adhere to their instructions.

Check your emergency exit

Don’t be so comfortable in your seat assuming that everything went fine. Go and find your emergency exit door and make a visit near to that. You might be sitting next to that or even you can clearly see that emergency exit door from your seat. Even though, I am recommending to go near the emergency exit door and check once the distance from your seat.

You will not be knowing the challenges to use that emergency exit door. Be a responsible passenger, go and check everything properly and make sure you can survive if something happened unexpectedly. Mostly flights will be having more than one emergency exit so make sure you explored everything well in advance.

If you are traveling with kids and family make sure that they are also clear with the instructions and safety measures.

Oxygen Masks

oxygen masks in aircraft

Most commercial aircraft that operate at high flight altitudes are pressurized at a maximum cabin altitude of approximately 8,000 feet. On most pressurized aircraft, if cabin pressurization is lost when the cabin altitude is above 14,000 feet, compartments containing the oxygen masks will open automatically, either above or in front of the passenger and crew seats, and the oxygen masks will drop down in front of the passenger.

An oxygen mask consists of a yellow, soft, silicone facial cup with white elastic bands for securing the mask to the passenger’s face. This band is adjustable by pulling two ends looped through the facial cup.

The mask may also have a concentrator or re-breather bag that may or may not inflate depending on the cabin altitude, which has (in some instances) made passengers nervous the mask was not providing adequate oxygen, causing some to remove them.

No need to panic here, cabin crew will be there to assist you in case of emergency. If you are capable of handling the situation help your co passengers as well.

Forget about your baggage

It not wise to waste time to trying to get you baggage however valuable it may be, with you. Always remember that one second wasted is a step forward in making your and your fellow traveler’s life in danger.

First priority must be in saving your own life and co-passengers life.If the plane is going down, forget everything, including the luggage. Just don’t leave anyone behind, such as children, even if they’re not your own.

Passport, Visa and all other valuable documents are important for every one. But life is more important than that Right ?

Call out for help

call out for help

Almost all the commercial aircraft will be having a radio communication system to communicate with nearest radio tower or airport. This can used for emergency communication from the flights. You might not be a radio jockey but kindly use it for god’s sake!

If you couldn’t locate the microphone, please proceed to the pilot cabin and make use of the pilot’s headset. A button labeled as Push to Talk will work to transmit your message.

Squawking 7700

A GPS aircraft tracking solution is made possible when an aircraft is fitted with a GPS receiver. By communication with GPS satellites, detailed real-time data on flight variables can be passed to a server on the ground.

If you know the aircraft is going to crash, find the transponder directly which will be usually below the radio station in the cockpit. This will locate the plane on the radar, which sends out its location for emergency help. Squawking 7700 is nothing but you are dialing 7700 from the transponder, which declares “General Emergency.”

Take care of children

This is not going to be an optional one for those who are traveling with children.Children will get panicked than adults easily. They should be accompanied with an adult during emergency exit period. Hold them behind your back and guide them properly.

They might have gone through the safe evacuation course, however kids are always kids. We can’t expect them to behave like a matured person. Please help them as well even if they are not yours.

The quick and safe evacuation

flight evacuation

The two minutes after crash landing is called as the Golden Period. This period is the most crucial time for evacuating the aircraft.

It is the duty of the cabin crew to make sure every single person is out of the aircraft. But it is equally important for the passenger to follow the guidelines of the cabin crew and get out of the aircraft safely.

If you see any smoke arising from the aircraft, try not to inhale it. Cover your mouth as much as possible while exiting the aircraft.Once out of the aircraft, try to reach at least 150m away from the aircraft as soon as possible.

Post landing procedure

Post landing procedure can vary from aircraft to aircraft but you will have a pretty decent narration of what has to be done. After the emergency crash landing , make sure you perform the instructed post-landing procedure.

You want to ensure everyone is okay, and make sure your instruments on the aircraft are functioning as properly as possible. This is the very important one among aircraft crash landing tips.

Final Steps

After the evacuation procedure it is not safe to stay back near the flight. Immediately move out to a safe distance. In most cases some arrangements will be provided from the rescue team for mobilizing the things.

Suppose if the crash landing is in a remote place , make sure that you and co-passengers are moving to a safe distance of minimum 150 meters. If the pilot needs any help make sure that assistance as well.
