Exploring Aazhimala , the hidden beauty near Kovalam

Aazhimala

When I heard about this beach from my friend, Honestly I didn’t expect it would be this amazing. Aazhimala beach will really tempt you for another visit. I expected a typical beach atmosphere of Kovalam or Varkala beach, but Aazhimala beach really surprised me.

I traveled on my bike to Aazhimala beach and its quite near to Trivandrum city, some 45 minutes journey. No need to worry you can take your four wheeler also till there. Mind was full of a typical beach atmosphere and usual expected verity of people. But the Lord Siva Temple at the sea shore was really a value addition for that trip. The place has some mythological stories associated with it and I can brief the story as well.

Bhima the Terminator prince of Pandavas of the Great epic ‘Maha Bharatha’ had passed through the place during his self exile from the kingdom along with the other Pandava clan and who on being thirsty gave a soft pounding with his ‘Gadha’ or giant club on the rock which instantly sprouted a fresh water spring which exists even now. It is also believed that the two marks left on the rocks nearby are the foot marks of Bhima.

Aazhimala Shiva Temple

Aazhimala Siva Temple is situated at Chowara, on the shores of the Arabian Sea.The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. On every Tuesday, large devotees gather here to offer Naranga Vilakku (oil lamp lit on lemon). An annual festival is celebrated during January-February.The temple is very close to the beach. As the beach can viewed from hill top, the name came to be Aazhimala, Aazhi means “Sea” and Mala means “Hill”

Every time I have some moment on a seashore, or in the mountains, or sometimes in a quiet forest, I think this is why the environment has to be preserved. – Bill Bradley

You will feel what Bill has said in his quotes when you visit the Aazhimala beach and temple. Every bit there seems to be nature’s own without much interference from the other world created by humans. Aazhimala can be rated as the best rocky shore among the beaches facing Arabian sea.

Unlike the other popular beaches in Trivandrum, Azhimala gives the traveler a different experience altogether with its moss covered rocks, large boulders and the small but elegant Siva temple facing the Arabian Sea. This will be a very good time out place to feel the cool sea breeze after an energetic session from Kovalam Beach.

So much seduced by the beauty?

Are you really impressed and want to visit this place ? well, here is how. Aazhimala is located around 45 minutes drive from Trivandrum city. Take the National Highway 47 towards Kanyakumari and need to take a right turn from the highway. Aazhimala is after the place Vizhinjam so you can keep this place as a landmark before Aazhimala.

You can see an arch kind of structure on the right side of the road which belongs to the temple. We need to catch that road which will lead us to the siva temple which is very close to the beach.
