Rollicking apsaras of Kattoothimedu, Idukki

Kattoothimedu Idukki

A little more isolated from the external world and as being less known outside, Kattoothimedu holds its pristine beauty still with it. Situated at a height of 4000 feet above the sea level, this beautiful area is the part of Senapathy Gramapanchayath of the Idukki district. Another speciality of Kattoothimedu is the fact that it is surrounded by rivers in its three sides.

In malayalam Kattu means wind, and as the name suggests, the winds here are more than just a breeze and is a part of it. More than 50 acres of land can be scene here. A Lotus pond and the beautiful nature surrounding it are the other main attractions to name. As other places in Idukki district of Kerala, Kattoothimedu has its own unique and exquisite beauty.

The story of Kattoothimedu

This isolated world has its own story to tell. In the old times, it was believed that the village was being protected by a god called Karuppuswamy. Karuppuswamy is also widely believed as a tribal form of Lord Siva. The seven dancers of Lord Indra, also called sapthakanyakamar, are also believed to take bath in the pond of Kattoothimedu during nights. Thus they are also worshiped along with Karuppuswamy.

Thick fog is a common thing in Kattoothi medu especially during the rainy season and winter season. Visibility becomes close to nil during these times. The natural beauty and the sweet smell of breeze makes us wonder whether we are in earth or in the place of Sapthakanyakas, heaven.

How to reach Kattoothimedu

There are 2 routes to reach Kattoothimedu from the Senapathy village. A normal route and a 4 wheel drive route. Obviously the harder the path gets, more beautiful and blissful it feels. The difficult terrains leads you to a hill top called Manithookkam medu. The Siva temple and the view on top of the hill is quite mesmerizing.
