Whenever I heard about kodaikanal during my childhood, first thing that came into my mind was its suicide points and chocolates. The most famous was of course the suicide point. But the Princess of hill stations has much more to offer. Be its the scenic beauty or the best place to cool off the summer heat, Kodaikanal is one of the favorite hill stations for the travelers to South India. The taste of the chocolates and the charming hills on western ghats can be the main force that brings me again and again to love Kodaikanal.

Located in the upper Palani Hills of the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu, Kodaikanal has got very good road connectivity to Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Although the nearest railway station is Palani which is 64 KM away, the best one to chose if you plan to visit Kodaikanal will be Madurai Junction. From Madurai Junction, buses or taxis are available in ease to Kodaikanal.

Pillar Rocks

This grand structure is a combination of 3 rocks which looks like Pillars. Recently shown in the Big budget blockbuster Bahubali, these rocks are a treat to watch from the view points. Previously people used to walk to the edge of these rocks, but due to the dangerous path it has been restricted now.

Guna Caves

Previously called as the Devil’s Kitchen, this set of Caves became more popular after the release of Kamal Hassan’s movie Guna. Known for its dangerous and creepy ravines, it was closed for tourists because of the tragic death of twelve youths who went exploring the place. Still the tourists are allowed till the entrance of the caves and the route to the entrance itself is a little creepy and an experience which is not to be missed.

This is the most common place for tourists coming to Kodaikanal. The lake is a man made one which provides boating and site seeing of the area around. There is a well maintained cycling path around the lake which is a good way to shed some calories and feel little heat in the cold and beautiful weather.

Bryant Park

Located towards the east end of the lake, this park is a well maintained 20.5 acres of botanical garden. The park was planned and built in 1908 by a forest officer from Madurai, H.D.Bryant. It has a large varieties of Roses and an old Eucalyptus and Bodhi tree which adds to its beauty. A good place to spent time enjoying the weather, this park is not to be missed. Make sure to reach before it gets late in the evening as the park gets closed by 6.

Pine Forests
