How about visiting a place which is exclusively for crafts? This time I am not introducing our usual scenic destination for my travelers. A village exclusively for the crafts, The Craft Village “Sargaalaya”. It is nowhere other than in Kerala. Vadakara and Iringal has become a bit popular for Sargaalya craft village by now. It would recommend this excellent destination for everyone who is travelling through Calicut.

You will never regret for the hours which you are spending in craft village, but can offer you very rare experience in your travel logs. Sargaalaya mainly focuses on creating a tourist destination, centered on hands-on interaction between tourists and artisans, who create, display and market their crafts on site.

Apart from showcasing crafts & craftsmen from across Kerala, Sargaalaya has a Crafts Design & Technology development centre that provides training for craftsmen on the latest techniques of production & encourages innovation in the traditional system.

Craft Village

Sargaalaya, the Kerala Arts & Crafts village in Kerala is an initiative by the Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala. It has started functioning from 2010 onward.

The Village is a craft cluster that was conceptualized as a tourism destination, developed and implemented on the Responsible Tourism model. It is an initiative to put Kerala’s traditional handicrafts on the tourism trail. The craft village has 27 cottages where, a hundred or even more artisans can work.

Now the craft village is having more than 60 crafts and 20+ exhibition stalls. The strategy being, to make Kerala’s traditional crafts an integral part of the tourism experience while also providing sustainable development for the artisans economically.

Tourism Packages at Sargaalaya

Sargaalaya is offering pretty decent tour packages for the tourist as well. Mainly they are offering two packages CRAFT FIESTA & CRAFTS GLIMPSES. A minimum of 2 people should be there for opting the package. Solo travelers, please excuse this time we can go for a one day trip here.I can brief the details of the packages here


Craft Fiesta is a 2 nights / 3 days package which costs around 18,000 INR per person on twin sharing basis (approximately $265 per person). First day will be at Calicut and proceed to Wayanad. Overnight stay at Wayanad. Second Day will be completely in Wayanad for sightseeing. The sightseeing places are Edakkal caves, Ambalavayal Heritage Museum, Pookote Lake, Soochippara Waterfall & Bamboo Craft making Units.Third day will be for Sargaalaya craft village.


Craft Glimpses is a 1 night / 2 days package which costs around 11,000 INR per person on twin sharing basis (approximately $162 per person). First day will be at Kannur and Muzhippilangad drive-in beach. Overnight Stay at Vadakara. Second day is completely for Sargaalaya craft village.

Apart from these packages, they are offering a very good boating experience through Moorad River for 15 minutes. One can visit the craft village alone with a nominal entry fees. Adults needs to pay some 30 INR as the entry fee and for foreigners it will be 100 INR.

How to reach Sargaalya craft village?

The craft village is set up on 20 acres of land on the banks of the Moorad River, just 200 meters off Kozhikode – Kannur National Highway near Vadakara. It will be around 40kms from Calicut city.

Sargaalaya visiting hours: 10 am to 6 pm (Monday will be holiday for craft units)
Nearest Railway station: Vadakara Railway Station, 5kms
Nearest Airport: Calicut Airport, 60kms
