Thattekad Bird Sanctuary

The first bird sanctuary of kerala, which the famous ornithologist Salim Ali described as ‘The richest bird habitat on peninsular India’is all set for the Summer season with its latest developments. The last year had witnessed a good increase in the number of tourists visiting Thattekad. This included an increase in both domestic and well as the international tourists.

Along with the bird watching, newly developed facilities include boating, butterfly park, view tower, watch tower, trekking and souvenir shops. The Sanctuary has also provided ample parking space and food courts for the tourists.

Garden of Butterflies

Thattekad bird sanctuary is also home to thousands of butterflies. The beautiful garden and its butterflies is a sense of excitement and joy for the kids who enjoys it to the maximum. Around 50 varieties of butterfly species are present in Thattekad alone. This is around 30 percentage of the whole 335 types of species present in the Western ghats.

The Garden has been maintained to attract and provide the best space for the butterflies. There are around 150 varieties of the total 2000 plants in the Garden.

This amazing Garden has been maintained to provide a learning experience as well for the visitors. This will be an unforgettable experiance in Thattekad.

The Butterfly museum is one of the latest attractions which is in its final stage of construction. On the way to the Butterfly Garden, a new rest place is set up in the shape of bird cages.

Boating in Thattekad

A whole new boating experience is set to get launched by April, around the Vishu festival time. A 13 seater boat will be present which will take the visitors to Bhoothathan kettu , Neryamangalam and Kuttampuzha.

The whole trip will take around an hour with a marginable rate of INR 250. This will be a whole new experience for the tourists.

Treehouse of Thattekad Bird Sanctuary

A night stay inside the tree house of thattekad is a unique experience for all bird watchers . The tree house is created using a combination of 6 teak trees. Each tree house is set up for 6 people in 2 floors.

There will be officials and guards present in floors below for any assistance and safety. With a very marginal rate of 1000 INR, the forest department is providing a package which includes 1 day and 1 night stay in the tree house. food, Trekking and Bird Watching.

Souvenir shops and Information Centre

The souvenir shop and Information centre is present in the entrance of the Sanctuary. The shop sells articles like  purses. T-shirts, Bags, Water bottles etc with the logo of Thattekad bird sanctuary.

A new cafetaria will be opened besides the car parking area by this Summer which will have the local and ethnic flavors of kerala.

Watch Tower and View Tower

The watch tower and view tower gives you the panoramic long distant view of the forests. Wild elephants are a common sighting during night. Watch tower is present in the main part of Sanctury itself.

The view tower is located in the Salim Ali trail towards Kuttikal which is also an ideal one for trekking.
The Watch tower accommodation costs around INR 2500 for 2 persons for a day and the view tower accommodation costs around INR 2000.

How to reach Thattekad

Thattekad bird sanctuary is about 62 kms from Cochin. The drive is along Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam and takes under two hours to reach. Kothamangalam is the nearest town . Buses ply in the Kothamangalam route from Cochin or Aluva frequenty.

The nearest railway station is Aluva railway station or Ernakulam Railway station.

The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport at a distance of 43 KM.
