The secluded hilly cantonment town cradled in Dehradun district of Uttrakhand, Chakrata offers a picturesque view of hills. The town was known earlier as Jaunsar bawar, a small hamlet of Jaunsari tribe. Explored by few tourists, this was once famous among the British officials for a perfect weekend getaway. Away from the all the hustle bustle of city life, Chakrata is located at an elevation of 7000-7250 feet from sea level and it can be reached from Dehradun via Mussoorie or Vikasnagar. Presently Chakrata encloses military cantonment and the access is restricted here for civilian travellers.
