The Banasura Sagar dam, which is the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia, impounds the waters of the Karamanathodu, a tributary of the Kabini river.

Indian Banasurasagar Project started in the year 1979 which consists of a dam and a canal project. The whole idea of the project was to support the Kakkayam Hydro electric power project and satisfy the demand for irrigation and drinking water in a region known to have water shortages in seasonal dry periods.

Banasura dam is an ideal picnic spot in Wayanad with a breathtaking view.The reservoir formed by the dam is dotted with tiny islands enveloped in thick foliage, and with the Banasura hill in the background, offers a magnificent view.

As a traveler, you have lot of activities avialable in and around the Banasura dam. Zipline adventure activities are available on the way to Banasura dam which is one of the lengthiest one South India. Another activity offered in Banasura dam is the boat service in the reservoir & Kayaking . Motor boats, pedal boats and sometimes coracles are also offered. One can really enjoy the beauty of Banasura hills during boating.

Legends say that the Asura king of Banasura, (the son of King Mahabali, who is believed to visit Kerala during every Onam festival) undertook a severe penance on the top of these hills and thus it was named after him.

The dam has constructed in the Banasura Lake and the nearby mountains are known as Banasura Hills. The scenic green lush mountains attracts tourists and dam site is an ideal starting point for trekking.During monsoon season in Kerala, visitors may also be able to see small islands in the dam’s reservoir.

They are formed while the flooded reservoir submerges the surrounding areas too.The vast expanse of the crystal clear water of the dam dotted with small islands is a photographer’s delight.

Banasura dam is situated around 15km from Kalpetta,Wayanad. Even though it is just 15kms, it will be slightly a long ride due to the curvy roads and tourist traffic.
